Allen and Doreen Dyke

Allen’s pond was started in December 1989, which replaced a smaller pond and completed in May 1990.  He personally constructed the pond and the surrounding garden, it’s butyl lined over a rendered finish.

The shape is irregular and contains 6000 gallons.  The filter system is remote from the pond and is based on K1 media being used as mechanical and biological filtration.  Two submersible pumps are used, one at the bottom, and one drawing water through the skimmer.  Water is returned via venturis, waterfall and surface splash return.  He also has a large quarantine/growing on tank beneath a pergola.  The pond and quarantine tank are heated as well as the greenhouse by a gas boiler.

The oldest Koi is 20 years old, which spends the winter on its side at the bottom pretending to be dead but is always first in line to be fed, along with 30 other Koi, and finally, there is Charlie the tortoise, which was found wandering around on Gravesend promenade in 1952.
