Barrie & Keith Burkin's Pond

Barrie & Keith’s pond holds 4,200 gallons, the dimensions are 14 x 14 x 14½ ft half way, then dropping to 6ft with one bottom drain in the deep side.

The construction consists of 4-inch concrete blocks, rendered, fibre-glassed, then finished with facing bricks to the outside wall and coping stone slabs on the top.

The bottom drain goes to a 3ft vortex then on to an estro-sieve. The water is pulled through by a 1/8hp Sequence pump, and then pushed through a Challenger bubble-bead filter 60. It then goes through a Yamitsu 55w UV and on to the heat exchanger, just before returning to the pond a gas boiler supplies heating.  A high-blow 40 supplies 5 air stones and the air dome on bottom drain.

The skimmer is connected to a small Sequence pump then returned back to pond to create more oxygen.  A pergola with allshade and clear plastic roof sheets cover the entire pond. A fence around the pond is to keep cats and grandchildren at bay, and very good to lean on whilst watching the fish.
