Tony and Maggie Martin

Tony Martin has been busy building a new pond and kindly gave us some photos of his progress. Like many of us Tony has been keeping fish for many years, starting off with a few goldfish, moving on to Koi which inevitably required a bigger pond.

He built a bigger pond measuring 9ft x 9ft and 4ft 6inches deep. It was filtered by a home made filter made from two fifty gallon water tanks fed by a four inch bottom drain and had a small UV. This setup was quite successful and was home to his Koi for five years.

His Koi then started to encounter some health problems which despite seeking expert help sadly resulted in Tony losing all his fish. Despite this, Tony used this as an opportunity to upgrade his pond making it bigger in the process as well. With the help of his girlfriend's son Peter he added a circular pond on the end of what had been a square pond. He also added a roof as well.

The pond now measures 21ft x 11ft. As you can see from the photographs the transformation has been amazing, not only the pond but the landscaping of the rest of the garden as well, and it looks great.

The unusual shape meant that a liner would be difficult to fit so Tony decided to render the pond and seal it with liquid rubber. I have read very mixed reviews about this coating but from the photographs the finish looks superb. I hope Tony will keep us updated on how he gets on with it, and also lets us have some more photos with his new fish in the pond.

Tony is rightly very proud of his new pond, and would like to thank the club members who have helped him out with bits and pieces which have helped keep the costs down.

Well done Tony it looks great.
