As these photos show (taken in May 2002) this was the pond after a recent modifications (July 2001, by Terry Hill of the KOI POND KONSTRUCTION Co, who is also an MSB member) were made due to the original liner leaking. The original pond was built in May 1988, this was about two years after joining the Middlesex & Surrey Border section Koi Club.
The construction takes the form of 4 feet in ground with 2 foot high walls, the original pond had a Box Welded liner, which was successful for a number of years, but had developed a leak, that was almost impossible to locate to enable repair. The pond is now fibre glassed, on a render finish, so now can sit back and enjoy.
The filters are gravity fed from the bottom drains, these are also connected to a discharge chamber that is connected to the main sewerage system to enable flushing. The filters are INFILTRATION four bay type, with Chamber 1 - Brushes, Chamber 2&3 - Jap Matting, Chamber 4 - Merlin and Sea Shells.
The system is run using two Grundfos Central heating circulators, feeding two venturies, one via 30W UV unit. Additionally, there is a 24" sand filter fed by a 3/4 HP ITT pump, this is mainly used between May and September to give that polished look to the water and which would also help reduce the suspended algae that seems to proliferate during the summer months.
There are also three Labradors to eat the surplus pellets (acting as a skimmer!!!!!)
There is also a quarantine facility.
